I hate corporate mission statements. The kind of ”ACME will be the best something or other company in the world” statement that rings about as true as those inspirational poster about teamwork. I also feel that Executive and Leadership are two words that almost never belong in the same phrase. I never saw the correlation between someone’s place in an org chart and leadership especially since most executive have a very short shelf life, a pre-packed golden parachute, and almost never exhibit care for those they “lead”.
Well, Saturday as I was driving around, I listened to a Stanford University Entrepreneurship Corner podcast by Guy Kawasaki. The title of the podcast is “Creating Enchantment”.
Kawasaki is a much better speaker and communicator than I’ll ever be so allow me to direct you to listen to the segment from 21:35 to 23:30 for his take on mission statements. I wish I could have voiced it as well as he does. Note that he also threw in tidbits about Executive Leadership and team building. That sealed the deal; I’m buying his book!
Oh, by the way, listen to the whole thing. It’s worth your time.
